Even with a shaved head and one arm missing, Charlize Theron still oozes Hollywood appeal. Tom Hardy’s Mad Max film has it all in the glamour stakes. Fury Road boasts some of the best action we’ve ever seen. Verdict: Another one for Hardy and his hands on approach. It’s not just franchise-defining stuff… it’s cinema-defining. Some of the action is on another level to what you have ever seen before. There is a great fight sequence near the start of the film involving Hardy, Theron and Hoult which is the only real break from the breathless chase sequence that makes up the rest of the film. Thankfully, director George Miller has stuck to the ethos that worked so well on the first set of films. The real fear with the new film was that the action would be too reliant on computer effects. Sure Mel might have had the singer of ‘What’s Love Got To Do With It?’ in one of his films, but Fury Road features the actual grand-daughter of Elvis Presley! Joining them are the ‘5 Wives’ played by an assortment of fashion models and celebrity offspring. As well as Oscar-winner Charlize Theron, who famously shaved off all her hair for this role, we also get bright young thing Nicholas Hoult. Tom gets some serious support in that department. What’s more, Tina Turner aside, can you name any of the actors coming along for the ride over the course of three films? Tom Hardy winsĭoes a loner like Max really need friends? Gibson had a high turnover of associates, although not many of them made it to the final credits of any of his adventures. Verdict: You can only blame the ’80s up to a point. Mel persisted with this monstrosity for almost an hour in the film… and nearly all of the ’80s and ’90s. He has the same awful hairstyle Mel has in Max Max: Beyond the Thunderdome, but only for the first few minutes. Verdict: As the mantra of ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ holds firm, Mel survives some serious fashion disasters to nab this one. The budget for the first film in 1978 was so tight that only Mel and his co-star were given actual leather… the rest of the cast has to make do with vinyl and plastic outfits! Imgine that in the sweltering heat of the Australian outback. Lucky for both men they are in the title role. Hardy also has the same jacket, hinting that there are some things that just can’t be improved on. The iconic look, with one sleeve cut off is the one most associated with the character now. Mel had a strictly uniform-based look in the first Mad Max, but loosened up a bit for something more practical in the sequel. Verdict: We give this round to the cherub faced youthfulness of Gibson We mean this in a very literal sense, as Hardy is now 37-years-old and plays Max as a world-weary veteran. Now that Hardy is playing the title role, he is essentially stepping into the boots of Gibson. Now that’s not to say Tom Hardy is some sort of hideous creature to be locked away in a clock tower.
